Pete Malloy, a seven-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, works in the Rampart Division. After his partner's death during a warehouse robbery investigation, Malloy is ready to quit. However, he's tasked with mentoring a rookie officer, Jim Reed, on his supposed last night on the force. Malloy sees potential in Reed and decides to stay, beginning a seven-year partnership that tackles serious cases like murder, robbery, and rape, as well as humorous situations like children getting into awkward situations and odd husbands getting kicked out of the house. Over the years, Reed develops from a probationary to full-fledged officer, while Malloy gets promoted to officer three plus one, just below Sergeant. Other officers they work with include Seargent "Mac" MacDonald, Officer Ed Wells, Jerry Woods, and Lew Walters.
