A group of friends, including Slip and Sach, work as runners for a New York brokerage firm owned by David J. Thurston. After his sudden death, which is ruled a suicide, Slip investigates and discovers a matchbox and dice that suggest foul play. They learn to cheat at games and get jobs at a high-stakes casino, where they uncover a web of corruption and deceit. Meanwhile, a crusading TV producer and a city councilman are working together to take down the casino's owner, Bruce McDermott. As Slip digs deeper, he finds a canceled check and eventually uncovers the identity of the higher-up in the racket.
