In 1984, a team led by producer Kenith Trodd was formed to explore how the BBC could respond to Channel Four's innovative approach to producing movies for both television and theatrical release. This led to a shift away from the traditional studio-made plays of the past, such as "Play for Today", and the introduction of a new anthology movie series, "Screen One" and "Screen Two", with Trodd overseeing the initial batch of titles in 1985.
