Philo Vance is called in to investigate, and as he begins to search for the killer, Larry is also murdered. The investigation reveals that Larry's will names six women as heirs, and that Katherine Corbett, one of his former wives, has also been murdered. Suspicion falls on Lorena Sims, a former wife who had access to poison at a sanitarium where she was a patient. Philo uncovers a crucial clue that leads him to break into the Blandon home, where he discovers Lorena about to give Stella a glass of warm milk.
