Philo, a US Government agent, is sent to Vienna to investigate Archer Coe's alleged aircraft design sales to foreign powers. He steals the plans, but is captured by police and deported back to America. Upon returning, Philo plans to confront Archer, only to find him dead in his locked bedroom with a gun nearby. Despite initial signs of suicide, further examination reveals that Archer was shot, beaten, and stabbed, making suicide unlikely.
