In191 9, a homeless woman named Hannah arrives in a small Indiana town, where she finds employment with the kindly Ward family as a cook and housekeeper. While her primary goal is to work for the Wards, Hannah's true intention is to reconnect with Peter Trimble, a teenager who lives next door. As it turns out, Peter is actually the son Hannah gave birth to out of wedlock and subsequently gave up for adoption, and she has returned to town to see what kind of young man her son has become.
