Rev. Ethan Wilkins relocates his family to a poor Ohio River village, where his son Jason struggles to adapt. Ethan disapproves of Jason's admiration for local physician Dr. Shingle and the magazines he lends him. Years later, Jason and his father have a fight, and Jason leaves to study medicine in Virginia. Despite his parents' struggles to provide for him, Jason's letters become less frequent and eventually stop when he's called to service in the Civil War.
