A deserter joins a wagon train to Oregon, only to discover an old friend dying from an Indian attack. The friend warns him of an impending attack on the wagon train and the destruction of a nearby army station. The deserter assumes his friend's identity and takes command of the escorting soldiers, earning their respect as a capable leader. As they near their destination, the deserter must decide whether to remain with the group or flee and risk being caught.
