Dr. John Brighton and his wife Louise travel to California on a wagon train in 1870, but Louise dies in childbirth in Oklahoma Territory. Dr. Brighton decides to stay in the town of Cherokee Wells and practice medicine, with the help of Mrs. Fitzgerald, an elderly widow who offers to care for his daughter. However, the town is plagued by rival cattleman Cass Dobie and his brother Mel, who stir up trouble and threaten violence when their plans are foiled.
