Tom Early, a former gunman and gambler, returns to his homeland to settle down, but is rejected by his community. He finds his wife has passed away and his son is working alone on their farm. Tom rides into town, witnesses the humiliation of Jo by her employer, and sees the arrival of cattle lord Grimsell, who plans to drive 20,000 head of cattle through their lands and town, disregarding the locals' rights.
