In 1870-1873, Texas was plagued by the corrupt Reconstruction government and state police led by Captain Jake Thornton in John's City. Two young men, Tom and Ray, flee to the Big Bend area to escape persecution. Ray, who is jealous of Tom's engagement to Laura, joins forces with Sam Garrett, a notorious outlaw.
