Mohammad Rasoulof, a renowned Iranian independent filmmaker, was born on November 16, 1972, in the city of Shiraz. Throughout his illustrious career, he has gained widespread recognition for his critically acclaimed films, which include the award-winning productions of The Twilight, released in 2002, Iron Island, which premiered in 2005, Goodbye, unveiled in 2011, Manuscripts Don't Burn, which was showcased in 2013, A Man of Integrity, released in 2017, and There Is No Evil, which premiered at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival, earning him the prestigious Golden Bear award.
Despite his remarkable achievements in the film industry, Rasoulof's work has not been without controversy. The Iranian Government has been at odds with him due to the sensitive and often provocative subject matter of his films, leading to his arrest on multiple occasions and the confiscation of his passport.
In May 2024, Mohammad Rasoulof was sentenced by the Islamic Republic to an eight-year prison term, in addition to being subjected to whipping and a hefty fine. In response, he fled to an undisclosed location in Europe, where he currently resides in exile.
