Icíar Bollaín Pérez-Mínguez, a Spanish actress, director, and writer, was born on June 12, 1967, in Madrid. Her father, an aeronautical engineer, and her mother, a music teacher, instilled in her a strong foundation for her future endeavors.
At the tender age of 15, Icíar made her acting debut, a feat that would set the stage for a lifelong passion for the craft. She went on to join the cast of Victor Erice's film El Sur (1983) at the age of 14, marking the beginning of her journey in the world of cinema. Since then, she has acted in a total of fourteen films.
As a director, Icíar's first feature film, Hola, estas sola? (1995),was a poignant story about two young girls who embark on a long journey to find an earthly paradise. Her second feature film, Flores de otro mundo (1999),co-written with Julio Llamazares, follows the story of four women who travel to rural Spain in search of love.
Icíar's latest film as writer and director, Te Doy Mis Ojos (2003),received widespread acclaim, winning seven Goya awards, including Best Film. The film is a powerful exploration of the abusive marriage relationship between Pilar and Antonio.
In 2010, Icíar's film Even the Rain was selected as the Spanish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards. The film made it to the final nine shortlist in January 2011.
