The adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel follows the childhood of an orphan named Oliver Twist, who is born in a workhouse in the 1820s after his mother's death. Oliver is abused, starved, and overworked, and is eventually apprenticed to an undertaker before running away to London. He is taken in by Fagin, a fence and thief-trainer, and his gang of pickpockets, and befriends Nancy, a good-hearted prostitute.
