John Grillo, a British actor and playwright, was born on November 29, 1942, in Watford, Hertfordshire. He pursued his educational endeavors at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he actively participated in student theatre and even performed with Footlights in their annual revue.
Following his time at Cambridge, Grillo was awarded an Arts Council Playwrighting Bursary, which enabled his plays to be showcased at various esteemed institutions, including Nottingham, Glasgow, Oxford, Dublin, and the ADC Theatre in Cambridge. Throughout his career, he has made appearances in numerous film and television productions, taking on a range of roles.
Some of his notable performances include playing Mr. Samgrass in the ITV series Brideshead Revisited and Phillip Marriott QC in Crown Court. He has also had minor parts in other shows, such as Blackadder II, Bergerac, Taggart, and Rumpole of the Bailey.
In 1997, Grillo landed the role of Mr. Carkdale, an English teacher who only spoke in Anglo-Saxon, in two series of Steven Moffat's school-sitcom Chalk. He later contributed to the audio commentary for the DVD release in 2008.
