The post-war veteran and former writer Dave Hirsch returns to his hometown of Parkman, Indiana, haunted by his past and struggling with alcoholism. He is pursued by Ginnie Moorehead, a woman who has fallen deeply in love with him, but their relationship is complicated by her connection to the Chicago mob. Meanwhile, Dave becomes reacquainted with his family, including his brother Frank, sister-in-law Agnes, and teenage niece Dawn, and begins to develop feelings for Gwen French, a school teacher and the daughter of his former professor. As Dave navigates his complicated relationships, he must confront his demons and the darkness of his past in order to find redemption and a sense of belonging in his hometown.
