Joe Palooka, a heavyweight champion, and his friend Humphrey Pennyworth stumble upon a murdered gambler near Joe's training camp. As they flee from the fleeing killers, they narrowly avoid being hit. Despite finding the body, District Attorney Michael Brogdon fails to prosecute the case due to the lack of evidence. A gangster later contacts Joe's manager, Knobby Walsh, demanding that Joe throw his upcoming title-defense. When Knobby refuses, he is kidnapped, and Joe is intentionally drugged to ensure he loses the fight.
