In 1850s San Francisco, Mary Rutledge, a young woman from the East, arrives at the Bella Donna, a rowdy gambling house, after finding her fiancé dead. She takes a job at the roulette wheel and catches the eye of miner Carmichael, falling deeply in love with him. When she tries to reunite with him, Louis Charnalis, the Bella Donna's owner, sets out to harm Carmichael, threatening their love and Mary's newfound happiness.
