Sergei Vladimirovich Dvortsevoy is a Kazakh filmmaker, documentary director, screenwriter, editor, cinematographer, and producer, born on August 18, 1962, in Shymkent.
Born to Vladimir Alexandrovich Dvortsevoy, an engineer-geodesist, and Vera Petrovna Dvortsevaya, an engineer-cartographer, Sergei's early life was marked by his passion for football. He played for the children's sports school team and was even invited to join the team of the second league "Ugolshchik" (Ekibastuz). However, he chose to pursue his education instead, enrolling in the aviation school in Krivoy Rog and graduating in 1982.
Sergei then worked in the Shymkent Air squadron from 1982 to 1990, during which time he also attended the correspondence department of the Radio Engineering Faculty of the Novosibirsk Electrotechnical Institute, graduating in 1988.
In 1990, Sergei discovered an advertisement for a directing non-fiction films workshop in Moscow and decided to enroll. It was here that he developed his skills as a filmmaker, creating short course films and diploma films that received international recognition.
After graduating from the workshop, Sergei went on to make documentaries and feature films, including "Tulip" (2008),which won the Main prize in the competition program "Un Certain Regard" at the Cannes Film Festival and numerous Grand Prix at international film festivals. His 2018 film "Aika" was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and won several awards, including the Grand Prix of the 28th International Film Festival in Cottbus and the Tokyo Filmex Film Festival.
In 2019, Sergei was invited to join the jury of the American Film Academy, alongside 841 other participants from 59 countries.
