Sasie Sealy is a celebrated writer/director residing in New York City, whose Southern drawl still lingers despite her extensive experience in the film industry. She initially explored her creative potential by studying photography under the guidance of renowned artist Gregory Crewdson and honing her writing and performance skills with the esteemed sketch comedy troupe, The Fifth Humour.
As her passion for striking visuals and physical comedy continued to evolve, Sasie's cinematic talents began to take shape, ultimately leading to a lifelong dedication to filmmaking. Her directorial career was marked by a successful debut feature film, Lucky Grandma, which premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and garnered significant attention from The New York Times, listing Sasie as one of the "9 Filmmakers Who Should Be on Your Radar."
Lucky Grandma received widespread critical acclaim upon its theatrical release earlier this year, earning its place on multiple "Best of 2020" lists, including those from Indiewire, New York Magazine, and Refinery29. Sasie's remarkable talent was further recognized when she was included on the 2020 Alice Initiative list of Emerging Female Directors.
Throughout her career, Sasie's short films have been showcased at the Smithsonian Institute and various international film festivals, with her short, The Elephant Garden, receiving the short filmmaking prize at the Tribeca Film Festival not once, but twice. Her poignant film was praised by New York Magazine as "one of the most touching and poignant films we've seen this year."
Sasie's extensive experience in the film industry also includes a fellowship and short with HBO in 2014, which led to the opportunity to direct episodic television and a DGA nomination in 2016. Additionally, she is a member of Bullitt Branded, a filmmaking collective and creative studio founded by Justin Lin and the Russo Brothers.
In her early days, Sasie made her mark in the commercial world of fashion and beauty, working with prominent brands such as Maybelline and Calvin Klein. Her commercial work has been featured in Vogue, Glamour, Style.com, and Refinery29, solidifying her reputation as a versatile and talented director.
