Robert Rockwell was an accomplished American stage, film, radio, and television actor, best recognized for his portrayal of the charming yet awkward biology teacher Philip Boynton in the radio and television sitcom Our Miss Brooks alongside Eve Arden.
Born in Lake Bluff, Illinois, Rockwell received his master's degree from the prestigious Pasadena Playhouse, where he honed his craft. During World War II, he served in the US Navy for four years, stationed in Washington D.C. Despite his dedication to his craft, dramatic roles often eluded him, yet he continued to appear in numerous television episodes and stage productions throughout his almost 50-year acting career.
Rockwell's extensive resume boasts over 350 television episodes, including notable appearances in the first Superman television show episode as Clark Kent's father, Jor-El, and in several Perry Mason episodes, such as "The Case of the Deadly Toy," "The Case of the Misguided Missile," and "The Case of the Lurid Letter." He also starred in his own ABC western-themed television series, The Man from Blackhawk, in the 1959-1960 season, playing the role of Sam Logan, the key investigator for the Blackhawk Insurance Company.
In addition to his television work, Rockwell appeared in various stage productions, including the 1946 Broadway production of Cyrano de Bergerac opposite José Ferrer and a San Diego production of Whitfield Cook's play A More Perfect Union alongside Ginger Rogers. He also made appearances in commercials and voiceovers, totaling more than 200, with notable roles such as the armchair grandfather in the 1995 Werthers Original candy spot.
