Biography

Richard Serra, a renowned American artist, was born on November 2, 1938, and passed away on March 26, 2024. He is best known for his site-specific, large-scale abstract sculptures that explored the relationship between the viewer, the work, and the surrounding environment. Serra's work is often associated with the Postminimalist movement, characterized by an emphasis on the material qualities of the art and a rejection of traditional notions of sculpture.

Serra's artistic journey began with a passion for English literature, which he studied at the University of California, Berkeley. However, he eventually shifted his focus to visual art, earning a B.A. in English Literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1961. During his time at UC Santa Barbara, Serra was exposed to the work of influential muralists Rico Lebrun and Howard Warshaw, which had a profound impact on his artistic development.

After graduating, Serra continued his education at Yale University, where he earned a B.A. in Art History and an M.F.A. in 1964. His time at Yale was marked by a close friendship with composer Philip Glass and an exploration of the studio of Constantin Brâncuși, both of which had a lasting influence on his work.

Serra's early career was marked by a series of experiments with different materials, including rubber, neon, and lead. His early works, such as "To Lift" (1967) and "Thirty-Five Feet of Lead Rolled Up" (1968),reflected his fascination with industrial materials and the physical properties of his chosen mediums.

In the 1970s, Serra began to focus on large-scale steel sculptures, which he created for site-specific locations in urban and natural landscapes. These works, such as "Tilted Arc" (1981),have had a profound impact on public interactions with art, often sparking controversy and debate.

Serra was also a prolific filmmaker, producing a collection of films and videos between 1968 and 1979. His early films, including "Hand Catching Lead" (1968),"Hands Scraping" (1968),and "Hand Tied" (1968),feature a series of actions that explore the relationship between the body and the material world.

Throughout his career, Serra has collaborated with a number of artists, including Joan Jonas, Nancy Holt, and Robert Fiore. He was married twice, first to artist Nancy Graves from 1965 to 1970, and then to Clara Weyergraf from 1981 until his death in 2024.

Serra's work has been widely exhibited and is held in the collections of numerous museums around the world. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century, and his work continues to inspire and provoke audiences to this day.
