Ramapada Chowdhury, a renowned Indian novelist and short story writer in Bengali, was born on December 28, 1922, and passed away on July 29, 2018.

Throughout his illustrious career, Chowdhury received numerous prestigious awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988 for his novel Bari Badle Jay, as well as the Rabindra Puraskar and several other accolades.

One of his most notable achievements was winning the inaugural Rabindranath Tagore Memorial International Prize. Moreover, many of his works have been adapted into films, such as the multiple-award-winning Kharij, directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Mrinal Sen, and Ek Doctor Ki Maut, directed by Tapan Sinha.

Chowdhury's writing career began during World War II, and he was closely associated with Anandabazar Patrika for many years, editing its Sunday supplement. His novels are characterized by an economy of expression, showcasing his mastery of the craft.
