Biography

Omar Ahmed Sayid Khadr, a Canadian individual, was born on September 19, 1986, and subsequently found himself detained at the infamous Guantanamo Bay facility as a minor for a period of 10 years.

On July 27, 2002, during the United States' invasion of Afghanistan, a firefight erupted in the village of Ayub Kheyl, resulting in the demise of several Taliban fighters. At the tender age of 15, Khadr was severely wounded in this conflict.

Following his detention at Bagram, he was subsequently transferred to the Guantanamo Bay detention camps in Cuba, where he was subjected to interrogation by both Canadian and US intelligence officers.

Khadr was imprisoned for allegedly having thrown a grenade during the aforementioned firefight, which ultimately led to the demise of an American soldier. It is essential to note that at the time of this incident, he was merely 15 years of age and had been brought to Afghanistan by his father, who was affiliated with an extreme religious group.

During the conflict, Khadr sustained severe injuries and was subsequently captured by American forces.

On September 29, 2012, Khadr was repatriated to Canada to serve the remainder of his sentence in Canadian custody.

Initially, he was assigned to a maximum-security prison but was later transferred to a medium-security prison in 2014.

Khadr was eventually released on bail in May 2015, pending an appeal of his U.S. conviction, following the Alberta Court of Appeal's refusal to block his release as had been requested by the Canadian government.
