Nan Triveni Achnas is a renowned Indonesian film director with a rich and diverse background. Born in Singapore in 1963, she spent her formative years in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she was exposed to a unique blend of cultures that would later influence her work.
Achnas's academic journey began at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts, where she graduated from the Faculty of Film and Television with a degree that would lay the foundation for her future success. Her thirst for knowledge and expertise led her to pursue a master's degree in Film Studies at the University of East Anglia in 1996, where she was awarded a prestigious Chevening Scholarship.
During her time at the University of East Anglia, Achnas directed her diploma film, "The Only Day" (1988),which would go on to win the Grand Prix at the Asian Young Cinema Film Festival in Tokyo. This early success set the stage for a long and illustrious career in filmmaking.
Decades later, Achnas would return to academia, obtaining her PhD degree from Nanyang Technological University Singapore in 2020. Her doctoral thesis, "Experimenting with the essay form and wayang in contemporary Indonesian filmmaking: when shadows are grey," was a comprehensive exploration of her craft and its many nuances.
In addition to her work as a film director, Achnas is also a dedicated educator, teaching film at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts, which is widely regarded as the premier film school in Indonesia. Her expertise and passion for film have made her a respected figure in the Indonesian film industry, and her contributions to the world of cinema continue to inspire and influence new generations of filmmakers.
