Biography

Born in Ōita Prefecture, Japan, the filmmaker began his educational journey at Meiji University, only to abandon his studies prematurely to focus on creating a series of innovative, independent 8mm films.

His cinematic endeavors soon gained international recognition, as his film "Carnival in the Night" was selected for screening at the prestigious 1983 Berlin Film Festival. Furthermore, his subsequent film "Robinson's Garden" received the esteemed Zitty Award at the 1987 edition of the Berlinale.

This notable achievement was followed by the Director's Guild of Japan New Directors Award, which further solidified his reputation within the industry.

In 1998, the filmmaker was awarded a research fellowship by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs, granting him the opportunity to study in New York. During this period, he organized screenings of his film "Junk Food in America", which showcased his unique perspective on the world.

Throughout his career, Yamamoto has consistently explored the lives of those living on the periphery of Japanese society, often incorporating unconventional settings and characters into his films. One such example is his film "Limousine Drive", which was actually shot on location in the United States.

In addition to his work behind the camera, the filmmaker has also made appearances in front of the lens, demonstrating his versatility and range as a creative force in the world of cinema.
