Marie Losier, a multifaceted artist, was born in France in 1972. She is a filmmaker and curator currently residing in New York City, where she has been actively contributing to the city's vibrant artistic landscape.
Losier's cinematic endeavors have garnered widespread recognition, with her films and videos being showcased at esteemed institutions such as museums, galleries, biennials, and festivals. Her academic background is rooted in literature, having studied at the University of Nanterre in France, and later pursuing fine art studies in New York City.
Losier has developed a distinctive filmmaking style, characterized by her unconventional, lyrical, and whimsical approach. Her body of work is comprised of film portraits of avant-garde directors, musicians, and composers, including Mike and George Kuchar, Guy Maddin, Richard Foreman, Tony Conrad, and Genesis P-Orridge.
Her films have been exhibited at prominent venues such as The Tate Modern, the Whitney Biennial, PS1, MOMA, The Berlin Film Festival, The International Film Festival Rotterdam, Tribeca Film Festival, The Cinémathèque Française, and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris.
Losier's feature film, which has been in production for five years, focuses on the life of musical virtuoso Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and his band Psychic TV. Her unfinished work was presented at The Centre George Pompidou in 2009 as part of the 'Hors Pistes' exhibition, as well as at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris.
In addition to her filmmaking endeavors, Losier is a dedicated film curator, having worked at the Alliance Française since 2000. During her tenure, she has presented a weekly film series and hosted numerous directors and artists, including Raoul Coutard, William Klein, Claire Denis, Chantal Akerman, Jane Birkin, and Jeanne Moreau.
Losier has also programmed experimental films at the Robert Beck Memorial Cinema and Ocularis, and currently brings experimental film series to audiences in Europe and across the United States.
