László Nemes, a Hungarian film director and screenwriter, was born on February 18, 1977, in Budapest, Hungary. He spent his childhood in Paris, where he developed an early interest in filmmaking, creating horror films in the basement of his family's home.
Nemes is the son of renowned film director András Jeles, and his passion for filmmaking was evident from a young age. He went on to study History, International Relations, and Screenwriting, before starting his career as an assistant director in France and Hungary on various short and feature films.
For two years, Nemes worked as the assistant to the acclaimed director Béla Tarr, gaining valuable experience and insight into the craft of filmmaking. After directing his first 35-mm short film, With a Little Patience, he moved to New York to further his studies in film directing.
In 2011, Nemes was awarded a scholarship to spend five months in Paris, where he collaborated with Clara Royer to develop the script for his debut feature film, Son of Saul.
