A passenger, later identified as Brown, disembarks from a ferry but takes an unusual route, meeting another man who throws a suitcase towards him. The two men quarrel, and the shorter one falls into the water and dies, clutching the suitcase. Maloin, in shock, watches the scene unfold, and the murderer flees, leaving the suitcase behind. Maloin finds the suitcase, packed with money, and is stunned. He counts and hides the money, then returns to work as if nothing had happened, but his life is forever changed.
