Kayla Abuda Galang, a multifaceted filmmaker, hails from Olongapo City, Philippines, and has spent formative years in San Diego and Houston. She draws inspiration from her surroundings and the communities that shape her unique perspective.
Galang's narrative approach is deeply rooted in her environment, where she finds humor in the minutiae and eccentricities of everyday life. This storytelling style has garnered her recognition within the film industry.
Recently, her film "When You Left Me on That Boulevard" took home the prestigious Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and the Special Jury Award for Vision at the 2023 SXSW Film & TV Festival.
Additionally, her 2021 film "Learning Tagalog With Kayla" premiered at SXSW, earning an Audience Award and subsequently screening at prominent festivals such as Palm Springs, Indie Memphis, Encounters, and Reel Asian.
Currently, Galang is working on two feature films: '06-'07, a coming-of-age comedy set in mid-2000s southeast San Diego, and On Earth as it is in Heaven, a comedy that explores the complexities of familial grief in present-day Houston.
