Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges Acevedo was born on August 24, 1899, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to an educated middle-class family residing in Palermo, a poorer neighborhood at the time. His mother, Leonor Acevedo Suárez, was of Uruguayan descent, tracing her family's roots back to the European settlers of South America and the Argentine War of Independence. She often spoke of their heroic actions, instilling a sense of history and identity in her son.
Borges's family moved to Switzerland in 1914, where he studied at the Collège de Genève, and later traveled extensively throughout Europe, including Spain. Upon his return to Argentina in 1921, he began publishing his poems and essays in surrealist literary journals.
