Biography

Helena Ignez, a multifaceted Brazilian actress and filmmaker, was born on May 23, 1939, in the vibrant city of Salvador, Bahia. During her second year of law school, she discovered her passion for theater and decided to pursue a degree in Dramatic Arts at the Federal University of Bahia. This was an exciting time for the Bahian theater scene, as it was breaking free from traditional Brazilian theater and embracing the influence of the young vanguard.

As a young actress, Helena made her screen debut in Glauber Rocha's short film "Pátio", marking the beginning of her illustrious career. She then went on to act in several films associated with the Cinema Novo movement, including "A Grande Feira" (1961),"Assalto ao Trem Pagador" (1962),and "O Padre e a Moça" (1966). Her breakthrough role came when she played Janete Jane in Rogério Sganzerla's "O Bandido da Luz Vermelha", a film that would pave the way for her involvement in the Cinema Marginal movement.

As a key figure in the Cinema Marginal movement, Helena took on the role of Ângela Carne e "Osso in A Mulher de Todos" (1969),a film that stood out for its bold and innovative storytelling. She was also a financial partner in the Belair production company, alongside Rogério Sganzerla and fellow filmmaker Júlio Bressane. During this period, the trio produced almost a dozen films together, some including of their most critically acclaimed works.

In addition to her acting career, Helena has also made a name for herself as a filmmaker. She has directed a total of 7 films, with one of her most notable works being "Luz das Trevas" (2010),a sequel to Sganzerla's debut feature "O Bandido da Luz Vermelha" (1968). Throughout her career, Helena has been married to Rogério Sganzerla and has two children, including actress Djin Sganzerla.
