Biography

Harvey Bernard Milk, a trailblazing American politician, made history by becoming the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, serving as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Born on May 22, 1930, in New York, Milk acknowledged his homosexuality during his adolescence, but chose to keep his sexual relationships private and discreet until later in life.

As a young adult, Milk's experiences in the 1960s counterculture movement led him to reevaluate his conservative views on individual freedom and the expression of sexuality. He eventually moved to San Francisco in 1972, where he opened a camera store and settled in The Castro, a neighborhood undergoing a significant influx of gay men and lesbians.

Milk's decision to run for city supervisor in 1973 was met with resistance from the existing gay political establishment, but he persisted, using his charismatic personality and unapologetic approach to attract media attention and votes. Although he was not initially elected, he continued to campaign, earning the nickname "Mayor of Castro Street" and eventually securing a seat on the Board of Supervisors in 1977.

During his nearly eleven-month tenure, Milk sponsored a landmark bill prohibiting discrimination in public accommodations, housing, and employment based on sexual orientation. The bill was signed into law by Mayor George Moscone and marked a significant victory for the gay community.

Tragically, Milk's life was cut short on November 27, 1978, when he was assassinated, along with Mayor Moscone, by Dan White, a disgruntled former city supervisor. Despite his short time in office, Milk's legacy has endured, and he is widely regarded as an icon in San Francisco and a martyr in the gay community.

In 2002, Milk was hailed as "the most famous and most significantly open LGBT official ever elected in the United States." His final campaign manager, Anne Kronenberg, described him as a visionary who "imagined a righteous world inside his head and then set about to create it for real, for all of us."
