Étienne Daho was born on January 14, 1956, in Oran, French Algeria. He is a renowned French singer, known for his distinctive low, whispery voice, often likened to Leonard Cohen or Chet Baker. Daho's music has garnered him a devoted fan base, and he is considered a pop cult hero.
Throughout his career, Daho has released numerous synth-driven and rock-surf influenced pop hit singles since 1981. His early albums, such as "Mythomane" (1981),"La notte, la notte" (1984),and "Pop satori" (1986),were all certified gold or platinum. He has also worked with various artists, including Brigitte Fontaine, Arthur Baker, Air, and Saint Etienne.
Daho's 1996 album Eden showcased his versatility, featuring electronic-oriented songs, downtempo ballads, and Hi-NRG dance tracks. The album included collaborations with Astrud Gilberto, The Swingle Singers, and Sarah Cracknell. Eden was re-released for the anglophone market, with the song "A New World" receiving great reviews.
In 2000, Daho released the number one album Corps & armes, which marked a departure from his electronic sound, instead featuring a more orchestral arrangement. The album included an English-language duet with Vanessa Daou and the hit single "Make Believe".
Daho's 2004 album Réévolution saw him shift gears once again, embracing a darker, more moody sound with a guitar-heavy rock influence. The album featured singles like "If" with Charlotte Gainsbourg and "Retour à toi" with Marianne Faithfull.
In 2005, Daho released a live album, Sortir Ce Soir, which featured many of his greatest hits performed in concert.
