Isidora Dolores Ibárruri Gómez, born on December 9, 1895, and passed away on November 12, 1989, was a renowned Spanish Republican fighter and communist politician. Her nickname, "Pasionaria," translates to "the Passionflower" in English.
Dolores Ibárruri joined the Spanish Communist Party when it was first established in 1920. During the 1930s, she became a prolific writer for the Communist Party of Spain's publication, Mundo Obrero. In February 1936, she was elected as a deputy for Asturias to the Cortes Generales, the Spanish parliament, representing the PCE.
When the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936, Ibárruri became a prominent figure in the fight against fascism. She famously uttered the rallying cry ¡No Pasarán! ("They shall not pass") during the Battle for Madrid in November 1936.
