Darren Robinson, also known as Buffy, The Human Beat Box, and DJ Doctor Nice, was a member of the iconic 1980s rap group The Fat Boys, alongside Doug E. Fresh and others. As pioneers of beatboxing, a form of vocal percussion, they revolutionized the music scene in the '80s and '90s.
The Fat Boys gained widespread recognition after appearing in the 1985 movie Krush Groove, where they went on to win a talent contest after being initially ridiculed. The film, based on the early days of Def Jam, featured a star-studded cast, including Blair Underwood, Rick Rubin, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J.
Despite their fame, Darren's personal life was marred by scandal in 1990, when he was accused of filming a 14-year-old girl having sex with a roadie at a Philadelphia party. He was subsequently fined $10,000.
Unfortunately, Darren's weight, which was perfect for the group's image, eventually contributed to his demise. He had also been diagnosed with lymphedema, a condition characterized by fluid buildup. His death was attributed to a heart attack, which occurred while he was battling the flu.
According to his older brother and manager, Curt Robinson, Darren had been trying to lose weight and was working on a Fat Boys reunion album at the time of his death.
