Bujar Alimani, a renowned filmmaker, was born in Patos, Albania in 1969, and later studied painting and directing actors at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana. In 1992, he emigrated to Greece, where he worked as an assistant director before settling in Athens and directing his first short film.
As one of the most prolific and important writer/directors of the New Albanian Cinema, Bujar Alimani's extraordinary body of work has garnered widespread acclaim for its unique blend of wild imagination and gritty realism. His films have been showcased at every major film festival worldwide, including Sundance and Berlin, and have received numerous international film festival awards.
Bujar's feature film debut, AMNISTIA, was hailed as a masterpiece by critics, winning the CICAE award at The Berlinale and participating in 80 film festivals globally, earning 13 additional awards. The film's success culminated in 2012, when it was officially selected to represent Albania at the Oscars and honored at MoMA in New York City.
Following the success of AMNISTIA, Bujar's second feature film, KROM, premiered at Karlovy Vary film festival and went on to participate in 18 international festivals, winning several awards. KROM also represented Albania in the foreign language category at the Academy Awards in 2016.
While working on his next feature film, THE DELEGATION, Bujar found time to create a one-of-a-kind indie short, MISSING EARRING, which generated buzz among producers and investors at the Sundance and Tribeca festivals.
In 2018, Bujar's documentary ZOIS was nominated for Best Documentary and Best Director at the Queens World Film Festival, further solidifying his reputation as a prominent figure in the indie film circuit.
Bujar has announced his next two projects, SNOW and ESCORTS, both gritty indie feature films in the vein of Scorsese and Tarantino, which are expected to continue his streak of critically acclaimed and award-winning films.
