Born Kalyan Kumar Ganguly, Anoop's early life was marked by a strong family background, as he was born into a Hindu Bengali Brahmin family in Khandwa, Central Provinces and Berar, which is now part of Madhya Pradesh. His father, Kunjalal Ganguly, or Gangopadhya, was a respected lawyer, while his mother, Gouri Devi, hailed from a wealthy family, providing Anoop with a privileged upbringing.
As the second youngest of four siblings, Anoop was surrounded by a close-knit family that included his eldest brother, the illustrious actor Ashok Kumar, his sister Sati Devi, and his youngest brother, the celebrated singer and actor Kishore Kumar.
