Aleksandr Vladimirovich Rogozhkin, a renowned Russian film director and writer, was born on October 3, 1949, in Leningrad. He left an indelible mark on the world of cinema with his remarkable body of work.

Rogozhkin's professional journey began in 1990, when he directed the film Karaul, which went on to win the prestigious Alfred Bauer Prize at the 40th Berlin International Film Festival. His 1992 film The Chekist was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, further solidifying his reputation as a talented filmmaker.

However, it was his 2002 film The Cuckoo (Kukushka) that cemented his status as a master filmmaker. This critically acclaimed film won numerous awards, including the Golden Eagle Award for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Directing, and Best Feature Film. The Cuckoo also received the Annual Best Film Award and Best Screenplay Award from the Guild of Historians of Cinema and Film Critics, as well as the Best Feature Film and Best Directing Awards at the Nika Awards.

Rogozhkin's work also addressed the Chechen War with his 1998 film Blokpost, a war drama that tackled the sensitive topic of the conflict. He also made significant contributions to television, directing episodes of the popular police procedural series Streets of Broken Lights and the spin-off series Deadly Force.

Rogozhkin's comedic genius was showcased in his series of screwball comedies, Peculiarities of National..., which included Peculiarities of National Hunt (1995),Peculiarities of National Fishing (1998),Peculiarities of the National Hunt in Winter Season (2000),and Peculiarities of National Politics (2003). These films were made in collaboration with Operation Happy New Year, which won the Nika Award for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor.

Rogozhkin's 2006 film Transit (Peregon) was a wartime tragicomedy that explored the relationship between Soviet soldiers and American female pilots in the Far Eastern outpost of Chukotka during World War II. As with The Cuckoo, Rogozhkin cast a number of amateur actors for Peregon, further demonstrating his innovative approach to storytelling.
