In 17th-century Salem, a woman named Hester Prynne is forced to wear a scarlet "A" as punishment for having a child out of wedlock. She has refused to reveal the identity of the father for seven years. A mysterious stranger, who is actually Hester's missing husband, arrives in town and assumes the identity of a doctor. He sets out to uncover the identity of Hester's lover, who is revealed to be a young and troubled pastor named Dimmesdale. As the stranger's investigation continues, he uses psychological manipulation to torment Dimmesdale, causing the pastor's mental state to deteriorate. Meanwhile, Hester sees a ship arriving in Salem as an opportunity to escape her situation and start a new life with her daughter and lover, but Dimmesdale's reluctance to flee with her threatens to destroy their chances of happiness.
