In a 1948 Italian refugee camp, a young woman named Karin meets Antonio, a man from a nearby village. Despite not being in love, Karin marries Antonio and they move to his home on the remote island of Stromboli, where a volcano looms large. Disillusioned by the desolate landscape and lack of people, Karin struggles to adapt, further complicated by the locals' disdain and her inability to speak the local dialect. After a violent confrontation, Karin sets out on a perilous journey to escape her troubled marriage and forge a better life.
