In a remote village, Diao seeks out an old friend after his father's passing. He becomes a local hero by winning a buffalo-racing competition, a boxing match, and capturing the heart of the village beauty. However, his newfound fame also earns him the ire of local gangsters who prey on the poor. When a Buddha image's head is stolen from a temple, Diao sets out to retrieve it, only to be brutally attacked and killed by the gangsters. Returning as a vengeful headless ghost, Diao is driven by a thirst for revenge.
