In this film, director Youssef Chahine critiques the connection between power and fanaticism, and denounces intolerance. The story is set in the Egyptian business world, where the pursuit of wealth is the primary motivator. The protagonist, Adam, returns from studying in the US and meets Hanane, a journalist fighting against the corrupt elite that has exploited the country's people. As they fall in love and get married, they face opposition from Adam's wealthy parents and their government friends, who are deeply entrenched in the corrupt system. Adam's mother, Margaret, is particularly possessive and violent, viewing Hanane as a rival. As Adam becomes disillusioned with the global economy and its ties to fanatical fundamentalist groups, he and Hanane face a heavy price for their resistance.
