A young mother, Halley, lives with her six-year-old daughter Moonee in a budget motel near Walt Disney World. Halley's rough demeanor, influenced by her own difficult upbringing, is passed down to Moonee, who often curses and acts out. Despite the motel's rules, the manager Bobby allows Halley to stay, as he recognizes that many of his tenants have nowhere else to go. As the summer begins, Moonee and her friends, including Scooty, are left to their own devices, while Halley's self-absorption grows. When Ashley, Scooty's mother, is away at work, Halley's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, causing her to alienate those around her.
