Jonas Cord Jr. inherits his father's Nevada chemical company empire after his death in 1928. Despite their strained relationship, Jonas takes control of the business, surrounding himself with a few trusted individuals. However, he becomes increasingly ruthless, buying out friends and associates, and diversifying his interests into aviation and film. His personal life suffers as well, as he mistreats those closest to him, including his stepmother and future wife. The question is whether Jonas' self-destructive behavior will ultimately lead to his downfall.
