Shannon Hughes, a restoration expert, volunteers to lead the renovation of a donated Tudor mansion for a social housing project. The project involves a team of volunteers, including her friend and client, crime novelist Macintyre Sullivan, his niece, and others. While working on the renovation, Mac meets Whitney Sloane, a bookstore owner, and they discuss a book signing at her store. However, their work is disrupted when a newly murdered body is found on the first evening of the renovation. Despite her father's wishes, Shannon decides to help Tommy and Chief Jensen find the killer, which leads them to discover that many people associated with the project had a motive and opportunity for the crime.
