In 1971, Egil "Bud" Krogh was summoned to a closed-door meeting with John Ehrlichman, Nixon's mentor and key confidant, in a secluded office at the Western White House. At first, Krogh believed he would discuss drug control measures related to his recent trip to South Vietnam. Instead, he received a file and responsibility for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU),later known as "The Plumbers." This unit was tasked with investigating leaks of top-secret government documents, particularly the Pentagon Papers. The president deemed this task vital to national security. Nixon expressed his preference for someone who would be 'a real son of a bitch.' Krogh, described as studious, zealous, and loyal, was chosen by Nixon.
