After a brutal decades-long occupation by the Cardassians, the Bajorans request Starfleet's assistance in rebuilding their world and society. Starfleet takes over the old Cardassian space station, now renamed Deep Space Nine, to oversee the recovery. The new commanding officer, Benjamin Sisko, and Lieutenant Dax discover a stable wormhole leading to the Gamma Quadrant, 60,000 light years away. The wormhole is inhabited by beings outside of time, which the Bajorans worship as the Prophets. As a result, the Bajorans declare Sisko the Emissary of the Prophets, causing tension between his roles as a Starfleet officer and the Emissary.
