During World War II, four Britons tunnel out of a German POW camp, but only one, Scottish Corporal Nicholas McGrade, escapes. McGrade, a slacker and reluctant soldier, is recruited into the secret MI9 Unit to facilitate other escapes. The two recaptured escapees, Wills and Jack Rose, are sent to Colditz, a high-security institution for repeat escapees. McGrade becomes infatuated with Rose's girlfriend, Lizzie, and fakes Jack's death to clear the way for a relationship with her after she rejects his advances.
