A family, including parents Jake and Emma, and their three sons and daughter, travel across the plains in a covered wagon, stopping in a lawless western town where Jake is ambushed by outlaws Arn and Jud. After being persuaded to continue by a kind-hearted judge, they settle at Break Wagon Hill, facing challenges and triumphs alongside their new neighbors, the Bascombs. However, their peaceful existence is disrupted once again by the return of Arn and Jud, who bring violence and danger to the community.
